Staff of the Right To Information Commission (RTIC) have been reminded that they are the custodians of a national mandate to ensure that democratic and inclusive governance is upheld in the country and must therefore showcase excellence, discipline and integrity.

Addressing a Staff Durbar on the eve of May Day to mark the World Labor Day and recognize hardworking workers of the Commission, Ms. Shirley Genevieve Lartey, Executive Secretary of the Commission said “the right to Information is not just a mandate, it is a pillar of accountability, transparency and open governance” and which placed a heavy duty on the staff.

She said in view of the sensitive nature of the mandate of the Commission, more training and continuous capacity building would be given the staff to be able to build a stronger Commission to ensure accountability and probity in the administration of the country.

The Executive Secretary disclosed that in the year 2025, the Commission conducted 110 Compliance exercises and completed 99 application reviews the recovery of a substantial amount in penalties.

Ms. Lartey said great “institutions are not by chance, they are built by people who show up every day and choose excellence” and such people must be recognized and appreciated  hence the plans by the Commission to organize regular awards scheme for outstanding staff.

In response, Mr. Stephen Owusu, General Manager, Legal, commended Management of the Commission for instituting the awards for hardworking staff and pledged on behalf of his colleagues that with unity and oneness of purpose, they will work to ensure that the mandate of the Commission is well executed for the benefit of mother Ghana.

The 4 staff who received awards for outstanding performances for the first quarter of the year were; Michael Duodo-Sakyiama, Nana Kwamena Esa De Veer, Louis Opoku and Emmanuel Donkor.

The Parliament of Ghana passed the Right To Information  Act (Act989) in March 2019 and received  Presidential assent on  May 2019 for the establishment of the Right To Information Commission (RTIC)  in October 2020 when a Seven-Member Board of the Commission was sworn into office with the mandate to promote, protect and enforce the right to information granted to a person under Article 21 (1) (f) 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
