In a recent radio interview, the Godfather of Ghanaian Hip-Hop, Reggie Rockstone, showered praise on rapper Sarkodie for his unvacillating dedication to his craft and his contributions to putting Ghanaian music on the map.
Speaking on Class 91.3 FM on Tuesday, December 19, Rockstone expressed his frustration with the lack of recognition given to the power of music in Ghana.
He acknowledged the difficult times the country is facing but emphasized that music has been a source of comfort and joy amidst the struggles.
“It’s music that has kept smiles on our lips,” Rockstone declared. He lamented that Ghanaians often take music for granted and fail to give it the respect it deserves.
“People forget the soundtrack of the country,” he said, calling for a greater appreciation for music and the artists who create it.
Rockstone then turned his attention to Sarkodie, commending the rapper’s relentless work ethic and commitment to excellence. “Sarkodie is constantly keeping it up… Rapperholic… This… He’s doing that!” exclaimed Rockstone.
He marvelled at Sarkodie’s consistent output of quality music and his organization of successful events like Rapperholic. “This boy! He’s working like a slave,” Rockstone said with admiration.
Sarkodie, along with other talented artists like Medikal and Stonebwoy, were hailed by Rockstone as standard-bearers for Ghanaian music.
He urged Ghanaians to “push them” forward and support their international success. These artists, he emphasized, are instrumental in making initiatives like the Year of Return and Beyond the Return truly meaningful.
Rockstone passionately advocated a conscious effort to showcase Ghanaian music to tourists, especially during the festive season. “It would be a waste of time if tourists came to Ghana and discovered that we were not representing [our] music,” he stated.
He urged stakeholders like DJs, nightclub owners, and media outlets to prioritize Ghanaian music and give it the exposure it deserves.
