Sevilla striker Rafa Mir has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of sexual assault and bodily harm, according to Spain’s Valencian Community High Court of Justice.
The court said the conviction, delivered by a provincial court in Valencia, can still be appealed.
A second man, described as a friend of the footballer, was also convicted and handed a two-and-a-half-year sentence for sexual assault and an offence against moral integrity, alongside a fine for minor bodily harm. Mir was also ordered to pay €64,000 in compensation to the victim.
The case relates to events on 1 September 2024 at Mir’s home in Bétera, near Valencia, after the player and his friend met two women at a nightclub. Mir, who denied the charges throughout the trial held in May, was arrested shortly after the incident.
The 28-year-old, who came through Valencia’s academy before joining Wolves in 2018 and later Sevilla in 2021, has had spells on loan at Valencia and Elche. He has also represented Spain at youth level and was suspended briefly following his arrest.
