The Foreign Affairs Ministry says the Government of Ghana has put in place a special support package for citizens expected to return home on 21 May 2026, following their evacuation from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks.

According to Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, the first batch of about 300 Ghanaians will be evacuated as part of coordinated efforts to bring affected nationals back safely.

He explained that the package is designed to help returnees reintegrate into society and will include a “welcome home” financial support, transportation assistance to their various destinations across the country, and a reintegration allowance.

Mr Ablakwa added that beneficiaries will also be registered in a special national database to access job and startup opportunities, stressing that the welfare and safety of Ghanaians remain a “non-negotiable priority” of the government led by John Dramani Mahama.
