A delegation from English Premier League club Sunderland AFC, led by owner and chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, has paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, in Accra as part of efforts to strengthen relations between the club and Ghana.
The visit follows Speaker Bagbin’s recent trip to Sunderland’s headquarters in the United Kingdom, where discussions were held regarding the annual Democracy Cup initiative.
Speaking during the meeting, Louis-Dreyfus highlighted Sunderland’s long-standing connection with Ghana through former players Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and John Mensah, all of whom represented the club during their careers. He said the club sees an opportunity to deepen its relationship with Ghana for the mutual benefit of both parties.
Sunderland Commercial Manager Scott McCubbin noted that potential areas of collaboration include youth football development and the promotion of women’s football.
Speaker Bagbin welcomed the delegation, describing the visit as a significant step toward broader cooperation beyond football. He expressed optimism that the partnership would enhance the Democracy Cup and support football development initiatives across Ghana.
The meeting concluded with the Speaker presenting traditional fugu attire to members of the Sunderland delegation.
