The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi, Thomas Duanab Wuni Pearson, has provided a candid assessment of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the recent general elections, pinpointing a range of factors that contributed to the party’s loss.

In an in-depth interview with A1 Radio, Pearson offered a thorough analysis, pointing out that internal party dynamics, mindset, and historical patterns played pivotal roles in the NPP’s electoral performance. He praised the NPP candidate for Bolgatanga, Figo, acknowledging the tough race he faced and the efforts he put into the campaign. Pearson noted that despite the challenges, Figo maintained a positive attitude and committed fully to his candidacy, even when it seemed like an uphill battle. “When you go into an election, you look at what would come out of the election positively, unless, of course, you are not committed,” Pearson remarked.

Despite Pearson’s admiration for Figo’s resilience, he also reflected on the internal struggles within the NPP, attributing much of the party’s defeat to its own public statements and internal divisions. “We were subdued as a result of our own pronouncements sometimes. That is what led to this massive defeat,” Pearson acknowledged. He also pointed out that this wasn’t a unique occurrence, drawing a parallel to the 2016 elections, where a similar defeat had been suffered. “But it’s not surprising because, in 2016, we did the same to them. In every eight years, these things are bound to happen, I believe,” Pearson said, referencing a common shift in party fortunes observed in Ghanaian politics every eight years.

Pearson further emphasized that the NPP’s inability to inspire voter confidence, coupled with ongoing internal conflicts, contributed significantly to their loss. He stressed that the party must learn from its mistakes and focus on rebuilding unity and fostering a positive outlook. “We need to reflect on this loss, but we must also refocus and work together to regain the trust of the electorate,” Pearson concluded.
