Great Olympics chief executive Oluboi Commodore has confirmed the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Statutes Review Committee has proposed increasing presidential term limits to three.
According to the revised statutes from the Normalisation Committee, which was approved by Congress in 2019, a GFA president can only serve for two four-year terms, for a total of eight.
Prior to the 2019 statutes, a president could serve for as long as he wanted, as former President Kwasi Nyantakyi did for 13 years.
However, it has been indicated that the Statutes Review committee ahead of Congress plans to increase the terms to three to make it possible for FA bosses to go beyond eight years and stay for a maximum of 12 years.
Oluboi Commodore, who is also a member of the committee says it is a prudent idea since it is common within international and national federations of the game.
“Yes, we have proposed to GFA to extend the limit or seal of the tenure of the GFA Presidency from two to three terms,” Oluboi told Akoma FM
“This is not new, various statutes by CAF and FIFA make room for extension of tenure to three terms which is why we have proposed the increment.
“It is not anything dramatic since members will have the opportunity to vote for the FA President if they believe in him based on his output.
“When congress affirms this proposal, then it will come to stay. Though other proposals are mandatory and some are not,” he added.
Having already served for a term FA boss Kurt Okraku is expected to either end his tenure or continue through elections which will be held later this year.
