Tunisia have appointed Hervé Renard as head coach for the remainder of their World Cup campaign following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi.

The decision comes after Tunisia’s heavy defeat to Sweden in their opening match and reports of tensions within the team’s camp.

Lamouchi, who had been in charge leading up to the tournament, was removed after just one game, making Tunisia the first men’s World Cup team to change coaches during the tournament after their opening fixture. The 5-1 loss to Sweden was reportedly a major factor behind the decision.

Renard, 57, is expected to join the team in Mexico and take his first training session with the squad in Monterrey. The French coach brings extensive international experience, having previously managed Morocco at the 2018 World Cup and Saudi Arabia at the 2022 tournament, where his team famously defeated Argentina.

The appointment marks Renard’s third men’s World Cup appearance with a different nation. He will be assisted by former Tunisia international Wahbi Khazri, who worked with Lamouchi and will remain part of the coaching setup.
