The Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), in partnership with ROPEAK Company Limited, a sub-contractor of Newmont Ahafo Mines, has invested GH¢600,000 in the construction of a 218-metre walkway at the Asutifi North District Hospital in Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region, as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the area.

The project, named after UMA’s Operations Manager, Kim Tailor, who initiated the intervention, is designed to enhance safe access within the hospital and support efficient service delivery.

The walkway addresses longstanding challenges faced by healthcare professionals, particularly in transporting pregnant women and elderly patients across uneven grounds between wards, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Chairperson of Corporate Social Responsibility at UMA, Bertha Yeboah Asiamah, said the project forms part of the company’s broader strategy to support community development in its operational areas.

She noted that the intervention reflects a shift toward impactful investments that directly improve service delivery and well-being.

“It is not only about investing in large-scale projects, but the impact this facility will have on the lives of the people. The project goes beyond infrastructure to improve accessibility, safety and comfort for both healthcare workers and patients,” she said.

The Head of Pharmacy at the Kenyasi District Hospital, Dr. Patrick Appiah Larbi, said the facility had enhanced the hospital environment and contributed to improved service delivery.

He noted that the hospital had, over the past three years, transitioned from a health centre to a district hospital with a 65-bed capacity and records about 100 out-patient department (OPD) attendances every day.

However, he highlighted infrastructure gaps, particularly inadequate space at the maternity ward, which has led to overcrowding, and called for expansion to meet growing demand.

Dr. Larbi also appealed for the construction of a perimeter fence to control unrestricted access to the facility by members of the public and stray animals, which he said posed risks to hygiene and patient well-being.

The Chief Executive Officer of ROPEAK Construction Limited, Romeo Stephens Wilson, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting development initiatives in its operational areas to improve community well-being.

The Paramount Queenmother of Kenyasi No. 1, Nana Adutwumwaa Moronsa II, who chaired the event, commended UMA and its partners for the intervention, noting that the project would significantly enhance healthcare delivery.
