Veteran coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has questioned the continued exclusion of Ghana Premier League players from the Black Stars, warning that the trend could undermine confidence in the domestic game.Sarpongs concerns follow the announcement of Ghanas 24-man squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cte dIvoire and The Gambia, with Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare the only locally based player included.The coach believes the absence of outfield players raises doubts about the standard of the domestic league and could discourage players competing in Ghana.Speaking to the Graphic Sports, Sarpong questioned why players who are overlooked while playing locally often receive national team invitations after moving abroad.We don’t know whether the local league is good or not because of the absence of the local boys, he said.They say the local boys are not good enough to play in the Black Stars, but it is the same boys who travel and, after one or two years, suddenly get invited to the national team, he added.Sarpong believes selecting deserving home-based players would provide motivation for others while also offering a clearer assessment of the Ghana Premier Leagues quality.Ghana face Cte dIvoire and The Gambia as they begin their AFCON qualifying campaign.
