Malawi made history on their first attempt at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by reaching the final of the tournament following a 3-1 victory in the semi-final against Algeria.Inspired by goals from the Chawinga sisters, the Scorchers produced a dominant display to ensure they at least leave the competition with a medal.After a tensed start to the game, Algeria were reduced to ten players following the sending off of Morgane Belkhiter in the first half.Malawi took advantage of the numerical situation to open the scoring after Tabitha Chawinga acrobatically fired home from a corner kick.Just before half time, her sister Temba doubled the advantage, rounding off Algeria goalkeeper N’gazi Boumrar before slotting home.After the break, the North Africans halved the deficit from a thunderous volley through forward Ikram Adjabi.But Tabitha made sure Malawi restored their two-goal advantage, racing through a sea of Algeria players to fire home.The South Africans will now face the winner of the semi-final game between Cameroon and hosts Morocco.All four semi-finalist have secured automatic qualification to the World Cup in Brazil next year.Meanwhile, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa will face off with the winner set to play in an inter-continental play-off for a place in the World Cup.
