WAPCo awards scholarship to 70 students in host communities

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has awarded scholarships to 70 bright students in the company’s host communities.

Of these recipients, 50 are in the Shama District while 20 come from the Greater Accra Region.

Among the 70 students, 37 were males and 33 females. The recipients are pursuing programmes ranging from Engineering (Aerospace, Petroleum, Mining, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical and Electronic, Geological) Doctor of Optometry, Dietetics, Medicine and Surgery to Food Science and Technology among others at the various universities across the country.

The total cost of these scholarships for the current academic year is GH¢462,000. WAPCo is also supporting approximately 120 continuing students in tertiary institutions across Ghana, with an additional expenditure of about GH¢750,000.

“This brings the total investment by WAPCo in the education of students from our seven host communities in Ghana for this academic year to a little over GH¢1,200,000.

“We are honored to contribute to the educational advancement of these bright young minds and remain committed to supporting their academic journeys and future successes” Mrs. Michelle Burkett, Managing Director of WAPCo mentioned these at the presentation of the 10th Scholarship Award at Shama in the Western Region.

She said “today marks a significant milestone in our journey, one that underscores our unwavering belief in the power of education and the boundless potential of our youth”.

“As a company deeply rooted in the communities where we operate, we recognize that our success is intricately linked to the well-being and advancement of those around us” she added.

Mrs. Burkett continued that; “this scholarship programme is a testament to that vision, a commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.

“We hope that this support, will empower you to reach new heights, explore new ideas and make a lasting impact in your chosen fields” she said.

Dr. Isaac Adjei Doku, General Manager, Corporate Affairs of WAPCo said over the past ten years, the company, has had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable journey of many young individuals whose potential, has been nurtured through the scholarship.

“During this 10-year period, we have supported 642 students from our seven host communities in Ghana at the tertiary level. Their dedication, perseverance, and academic achievements have not only set them apart but have also inspired us all” he said.

He pointed out that the recipients have demonstrated exceptional talent and an unwavering commitment to their education. “This award is not just a recognition of your past accomplishments but also a vote of confidence in your future. We believe in your potential    to contribute meaningfully to our society, and we are excited to see how you will use this opportunity to further your goals” he said.

He mentioned that “by investing in education, we invest in the future, and we are proud to contribute to the growth and development of talented young minds who will shape tomorrow’s world”.

The District Chief Executive of Shama, Ebenezer Dadzie commended WAPCo for their continuous support over the years.

“The scholarship, will go a long way to improve the lives of the recipients. We expect companies operating in the district, to emulate the example of WAPCo and support the communities in the area”, he added.

Nana Kwamina Wienu II, Acting Chief of Shama Traditional Council also appreciated WAPCo for their commitment to the students in their host communities.
