A total of 6,750 private candidates out of 25,055, representing 26.94%, who sat for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) failed core mathematics, according to the provisional results released by WAEC.
Also, 11,260 candidates had between grades A1 and C6, which is usually the cut-off grade for tertiary admissions. The figure represents 44.94 percent out of 25,055.
It further revealed that a total of 3,183 had grade D7, while 3,349 had grade E8.
Amongst the four core courses, Social Studies had the lowest number of candidates scoring F9, followed by English Language.
Only 829 out of 17,414 candidates who wrote the Social Studies paper had grade F9. 15,214 scored between grades A1 and C6, with 576 scoring D7 while 409 had E8.
As for the English language, a total of 1,958 of the candidates out of 25,422 who sat for the paper had F9. Also, 65.15 percent, which is 16,563, scored between A1 and C6. 2,955 had grade D7, while 2,479 had grade E8.
Meanwhile, out of 22,812 candidates who wrote the Integrated Science paper, 3,964 had F9. 11,751 had grades A1 and C6, with 3,173 securing D7. 3,280 of them also had grade E8.
Background
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results for 37,825 WASSCE Private Candidates, 2023—Second Series. According to WAEC, the candidates are made up of 17,389 males and 20,725 females, of whom 16 are visually impaired.
“The results of 289 candidates alleged to have been involved in various cases of examination malpractice have been withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into the cases of malpractice. These malpractices include collusion, impersonation, bringing foreign materials, including mobile phones, into the examination hall and seeking external assistance, among others,” WAEC said in a press release dated February 20.
According to the sub-regional examination body, “The withheld results of candidates will be released or cancelled based on the outcome of investigations. The results are available online at www.waecgh.org.”
WAEC added that “a total of 1,231 candidates who registered for the examination were absent.”
The Council cautioned members of the public, “to be wary of scammers who
contact candidates and promise to upgrade their results for a fee payable through mobile money transfers. Candidates are to note that WAEC’s results database is well secured and all results can be authenticated. Institutions and organisations are therefore advised to confirm or verify results presented to them directly from WAEC, access the confirmation/verification service online at the WAEC website or download the WAEC QR Code.”
WAEC expressed its sincere gratitude “to all Heads of School who provided
accommodation for the examination Supervisors, Invigilators, Examiners and indeed all partners who in various ways supported it in the successful conduct of the examination and release of results.”
