Ghanaian music duo Keche has responded to conversations surrounding their recent Best Group award win at the just-ended Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Joshua Kojo Ampah, a member of Keche, addressed claims by some critics who believe the category was not competitive enough and that the outcome would have been different if DopeNation had been nominated in the same category.

According to him, many people are confusing the category with one that focuses on hit songs rather than the overall performance of a music group within the year under review. He stressed that the award is for the “Best Group of the Year” and not “Group Song of the Year,” explaining that consistency, performances, visibility, and contribution throughout the year all play a major role in determining the winner.

Keche Joshua further defended the group’s win by highlighting how active Keche was throughout the year. He revealed that from September through the festive season and into early January, the duo performed at several events across the country.

“We were everywhere… actively last year. It started from September, we were everywhere…..back-to-back till December 31st. So actively, Keche was fantastically active last year, ” he said, adding that the group maintained a very busy schedule with performances and appearances at several events across the country, which he believes made them deserving winners regardless of the competition.

He also argued that conversations about awards should go beyond comparing one successful song to another, insisting that the category considers the overall work and contribution of a group during the period under review.

His comments have since sparked mixed reactions online, with some fans supporting his explanation while others continue to debate the competitiveness of the category.
