During the vetting of John Dumelo, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, some of the questions posed to him sparked widespread debate, with many Ghanaians deeming them irrelevant to his ministerial role.
On February 25, 2025, John Dumelo appeared before the Appointments Committee for his vetting. Notably, he carried a rosary with him, openly declaring that he is a devout Catholic and a firm believer in his faith.
His decision to bring a rosary, however, led to an unexpected line of questioning from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The lawmaker inquired whether Dumelo was indeed a Catholic and, more surprisingly, if he was a member of any secret societies within the church.
In response, John Dumelo firmly denied any affiliations with Catholic fraternities or secret societies, clarifying that his sole connection to the church was as a member who attends regular worship services.
“I don’t belong to any society in the Catholic Church,” Dumelo asserted.
Following the exchange, many Ghanaians took to social media to express their disapproval, questioning the relevance of such inquiries during a vetting process. Some wondered how Dumelo’s religious beliefs or church affiliations had any bearing on his competence to serve as Deputy Minister of Agriculture.
