I have seen many definitions for the word purpose, there are two definitions which I feel capture the essence of purpose which are as follows ‘the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists’ and the other being ‘the motivation for your life—the reason you get up in the morning’. Purpose therefore can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, it creates meaning.
As a life coach the initial conversations I have with my clients normally borders around the question, “What is my purpose in life?”
When I first started to become a life coach, there was a phrase that was quite popular back then, which was, ‘you must eradicate your limiting beliefs.’ It is my personal view that the concept of ‘limiting beliefs’ is still as relevant today as it was then.
The reason that people don’t always seem to pursue their goals is because of the conversations that they tend to have with themselves, the things we have told ourselves has created our limiting beliefs, such as we are not good enough, we do not deserve to be happy, we haven’t got what others have in terms of skills, contacts or even the looks, such thoughts – lead to limiting behaviors and fear of failure and even self-sabotage. A change in such thoughts, to a can-do spirit, can help us to pursue our purpose.
The clue to finding your purpose is found in what makes you feel fulfilled, what you are passionate about, what truly motivates you.
