Windstorm destroys properties worth thousands of cedis

A windstorm which lasted for 45 minutes yesterday evening in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, has destroyed properties worth thousands of cedis. The affected structures include houses, stores, school buildings and electricity poles.

The affected areas were Korley Abansro, Gallaway, Anlo Town and Obour Tabiri where the GBC transmitter is sited. At Korley Abansro an earth story building which was the first story building in the area since settlement collapsed due to the windstorm.

The Dadematsɛ of the Area, Dadematsɛ Amoatey narrated the incident to GBCNEWS.

At Obour Tabiri, two of the electricity poles and wires which supplied power to GBC transmitter site have fallen down thereby affecting GBC’s Eastern Regional radio and Digital Terrestrial Television transmission.

The story is not different at the A.M.E Zion basic school at Anlo Town where six classroom blocks had their roofing ripped off leaving teachers and student stranded.

According to the Headteacher of the school, Madam Salome Adu, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, had come to assess the damage caused and promised to support the school to help fix the situation.

However, she said, management of the school has merged some of the classes for teaching and learning to continue.

The Head of Operations at the New Juaben South Municipal office of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Alfred Owiredu Agyemang, said his outfit will collaborate with other development partners to support the affected victims to have their damaged structures fixed.

He alerted the citizenry of more rains in the coming days and urged the public to be extra careful of their movement.

Mr. Agyemang added that NADMO is doing everything possible to minimize flood disasters in the municipality in this rainy season.

However, no casualty was recorded as a result of the windstorm.
