The late Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo Band, Yaw Sarpong, will be laid to rest this weekend at Asuofua in the Ashanti Region following his passing earlier this year at the age of 63.
Funeral activities for the celebrated gospel icon are scheduled to begin on Friday, May 8, 2026, with a wake-keeping ceremony ahead of the main burial service on Saturday, May 9, at the Asuofua Town Park.
On Saturday, mourners, family members, and well-wishers are expected to converge at the park to pay their final respects. The day will include the lying-in-state for public viewing, followed by a burial service and the final funeral rites to honor the deceased’s life and legacy before interment.
A thanksgiving service in honour of the late musician will also be held on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Sokoban-Ampayoo before mourners reconvene later at the Asuofua Town Park.
The ceremony is expected to attract thousands of mourners from across the country, including colleague gospel musicians, celebrities, politicians, industry players, church leaders, and fans whose lives have been impacted by Yaw Sarpong’s music and ministry over the years.

Yaw Sarpong was widely admired for his contribution to Ghana’s gospel music industry through inspirational songs and decades of ministry with the Asomafo Band. Over the years, his music became popular among many Christians and gospel music lovers, making him one of the most recognised gospel figures in the country.
Many within Ghana’s gospel fraternity continue to describe him as one of the genre’s most influential figures whose songs inspired generations. His final funeral rites come just a few weeks after the burial of his longtime colleague Maame Tiwaa, who performed alongside him for many years as part of the Asomafo Band.
Maame Tiwaa passed away about a month before Yaw Sarpong’s death and was laid to rest in April 2026.
