Vice President and presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has rubbed salt in the wound of the NDC after the Supreme Court ruling to stay the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four seats in the House vacant following the affected MPs’ decision to contest the December 7 elections as independent candidates.
The Speaker’s ruling Thursday evening reduced the number of seats of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), thereby, granting the NDC Caucus a temporary majority status.
However, in the midst of the excitement by the NDC MPs and members including their leader, former President John Mahama, the Supreme Court granted an application by the NPP lawmakers to stay the Speaker’s ruling which effectively halts the action and reverts the NDC back to minority in the House.
Addressing an enthusiastic audience at Nkawkaw on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia taunted the NDC Caucus saying “a few days ago they did something in Parliament and they said they were the majority side. Anyway, they got the majority for just 24 hours”.
”That is 24-hour majority. It didn’t last at all . The shortest living majority that I know of in history”, he ridiculed the NDC.
Dr. Bawumia told the NDC that they “cannot manufacture a majority”.
“They should know that if they want majority, they should come to the polling station. Come to the constituency, win an election and then go to parliament. You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself”, he said.
Dr. Bawumia was also optimistic that the NPP will win overwhelming majority in the next Parliament.
“We will meet them in the constituencies and we will meet them at the polling stations. What I can assure you is that from what I know; I have been to over 200 constituencies, I have campaigned on the ground.
“I have seen the data and I can tell you that if we hold the elections today, NPP will have a decisive majority in Parliament. There is no doubt about it. If the elections are held today, the NPP will have a decisive majority. Not a majority but a decisive majority in Parliament.”
