Japan produced a spirited display to hold the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining Group F encounter at AT&T Stadium.
The Oranje took the lead on two occasions but were denied all three points by a resilient Japanese side that refused to give up.
Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring for the Dutch before Keito Nakamura brought the Blue Samurai level with a well-taken equaliser.
The Netherlands regained their advantage through Crysencio Summerville, who restored his side’s lead and appeared to have put them on course for victory.
However, Japan hit back once again, with Daichi Kamada finding the equaliser to ensure the points were shared in a pulsating contest.
The result leaves both teams with a point from their opening Group F fixture and sets up an intriguing battle for qualification to the knockout stages.
The Netherlands will next face Sweden on June 20, while Japan will take on Tunisia on June 21 in their second group match as both nations seek their first victory of the tournament.
