The 63rd ordinary session of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit has ended with governments being encouraged to assist Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea in transitioning to democratic rule. These are among the concluding issues from the session.
President Akufo-Addo described Ghana’s recognition by the WHO in the fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases as good news.
Furthermore, the Heads of State and governments have decided to take a deep dive into the creation of the ECOWAS single currency through a high-level committee.
And ECOWAS was commended for the successful conduct of elections in Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
Also, President of the African Union Commission, Mossa Faki, urged ECOWAS to use mechanisms to deepen cooperation in the Junta process and the Accra initiative.
In addition, the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken over from Guinea-Bissau’s President, General Umaro Sissoco Embalo, as the President of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government from July 2023 to July 2024.
This is Mr. Tinubu’s first participation at the ECOWAS Summit as President.
In his acceptance speech to end the session, the new ECOWAS President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu pledged to work collectively with other Heads of State to pursue economic integration by committing to democracy and the rule of law.
