Asante Kotoko interim coach Abdul Gazale remains optimistic that his team can still clinch this season’s Ghana Premier League title despite their inconsistent performances so far.

Although the defending champions have struggled to string together consecutive wins, Gazale believes there is still a chance for them to compete for the trophy.

The team’s recent poor form led to the mutual termination of the contract of Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo, with Gazale asked to take charge of the first team, and in his first game Kotoko failed to hold on to an early lead, resulting in a draw against Legon Cities at the El Wak Stadium.

Despite the disappointing result, Gazale remains hopeful, pointing out that there are still a significant number of matches remaining in the season, which gives his team ample opportunity to make a comeback and defend their title.

“Definitely, we are working hard. The players are aware Kotoko can’t afford to lose the trophy and we will work on it. There are 11 matches more and if we record wins from those matches we are likely to climb to the top and that’s what we are going to work on,” he said after the game.

Having exited the CAF Champions League in the first round, the Porcupines Warriors were also knocked out of the FA Cup in the round of 16 by Aduana Stars, leaving them with the league title as their only possible silverware this season.

Lying sixth on the table, they would have to leapfrog, Accra Lions, Hearts of Oak, Bechem United, Medeama and league leaders Aduana Stars to secure the title.
