President Nana Akufo-Addo announced a significant expansion of the nearly sixty-year-old Accra-Tema Motorway during a sod-cutting ceremony in Accra on August 24, 2024.
The project will transform the motorway into a modern 10-lane highway, easing traffic congestion and enhancing safety.
The motorway, which connects the industrial city of Tema with Accra’s central business district, will undergo a significant upgrade through a public-private partnership with a wholly Ghanaian-owned company.
This development is a milestone for local enterprises and a progressive step for Ghana’s infrastructure.
The 27.7-kilometre project is divided into three main sections: the rehabilitation of the motorway, improvements to the George Walker Bush Highway, and upgrades to the Nsawam Road.
Key features of the expansion include reconstructing interchanges, adding toll plazas, footbridges, and other essential infrastructure enhancements.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized his administration’s dedication to building a modern, prosperous, and interconnected Ghana, urging all stakeholders to ensure the project is completed on schedule and within budget.
