British actor Idris Elba has been formally knighted by King Charles III, receiving the title “Sir Idris Elba” during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Monday.
The honour recognises his contributions to supporting young people through charitable and community-focused initiatives.
The 53-year-old actor was awarded the knighthood for his work with the Elba Hope Foundation, a charity he co-founded with his wife, Sabrina Elba, in 2022. The organisation works to address youth unemployment, expand access to education and help tackle food insecurity in underserved communities.
Following the ceremony, the royal family shared photographs from the event on social media, while Elba reposted the images with the message: “We are thankful. The work continues.” He also shared a photograph alongside his wife at Windsor Castle, marking the occasion.
The honour reflects Elba’s long-standing commitment to youth development, a cause he has often linked to his own experiences. As a teenager, he received support from The King’s Trust, which helped him pursue a career in the arts. His knighthood was announced in King Charles’ 2026 New Year Honours List, alongside honours awarded to several other notable figures from the worlds of entertainment, sport and public service.
