The educational facilities in Ogbodokope, a semi-island community in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region, are in a state of crisis, with severe implications for teaching and learning outcomes.

The community faces a significant teacher shortage due to a lack of accommodation, with educators unwilling to take posts there.

The isolated nature of Ogbodokope, accessible only by boat on the Volta River, and its surrounding settlements, all lacking basic amenities such as electricity, potable water, and healthcare, further exacerbate the situation.

Due to the absence of formal school buildings, children in Ogbodokope attended classes under trees for over two decades.

Despite attempts to secure support from education authorities, progress has been slow.

Undeterred, the community took matters into their own hands and initiated the construction of mud classroom structures. However, progress has been stalled for years.

In response, the community has shown remarkable resilience by constructing a six-unit teacher accommodation block through communal efforts. This was further bolstered by the support from the local MP, who provided roofing sheets.

However, the building still needs to be completed, and it needs more doors and windows.

It is currently used as a classroom during the day and as a shelter for goats in the evenings.

The school needs more furniture. During a recent visit, the news team observed that water collected on the classroom floor after rainfall, leaving the area where students sit during lessons damp.

The absence of proper seating forces some students to bring kitchen stools from home, which can be uncomfortable and distracting during lessons.

Manasseh Ogbodo Kuma, one of the two teachers at the school, expressed concerns about the lack of furniture, noting that students sometimes use kitchen stools or sit on the floor.

Kuma, who often manages the entire school when the head teacher is engaged in administrative tasks, highlighted the worsening of the situation due to the insufficient number of teachers.

The community’s challenges extend beyond education. The lack of basic healthcare facilities, such as a clinic or hospital, compounds the difficulties faced by residents, often leading to preventable health issues and even fatalities.

The local assemblyman has voiced concerns over the impact of these issues on the community’s well-being.

Improvements in educational infrastructure and healthcare are crucial for Ogbodokope’s residents, enhancing their quality of life and providing better opportunities.
