The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has launched a manhunt for a gang of armed robbers who shot and killed a footballer during a highway attack near Ahyiresu on Sunday night.

The victim, Dominic Frimpong, a player of Berekum Chelsea, was part of a group of about 30 players and officials travelling on a VIP bus along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road when the incident occurred at about 2230 hours.

Police reports indicate that six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns, ambushed the vehicle, prompting the driver to veer off the road into a bush in an attempt to escape the attack.

In the process, Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

Another passenger, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of GH¢4,500.00 during the incident.

A press release issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command, said patrol teams responded swiftly to distress calls and proceeded to the scene, where preliminary investigations led to the retrieval of two spent BB cartridges to aid ongoing investigations.

As part of efforts to apprehend the suspects, the Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel, including crime scene experts, to comb the area and track down the attackers.

The Command has assured the public that the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to justice, while urging residents and road users to volunteer credible information to assist the investigation.

The incident has heightened security concerns along the stretch, with travelers calling for increased Police visibility as the manhunt intensifies.
