The Bank of Africa (BOA)-Ghana, a member of the BMCE Group, has settled the medical bills for some patients in the labour, maternity, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the children’s ward of the Maamobi General Hospital who were still on admission due to non-payment of bills, enabling them to reunite with their families.
The corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, which was carried out in commemoration of Mother’s Day, 2026, aimed at demonstrating the brand’s commitment to giving back to society with the ultimate intention of fostering socioeconomic development and clients’ well-being.
BOA, in addition to the payment of the medical bills for these patients, also donated hygienic and sanitary items such as baby diapers, tissue towels, detergents and packs of bottled water, among other assorted provisions.
Deputy Managing Director, BoA-Ghana, Fatoumata Gakou, underscored the significance of such an initiative, emphasising that as a bank intentional about women empowerment with dedicated banking instruments designed purposely for women, supporting women in desperate need of help on an occasion such as Mother’s Day is in line with the core values and beliefs of the management.
“At BOA-Ghana, we have a Women’s Banking Desk and are very committed to the well-being of women, and so, the payments we made today are coming from the women’s banking desk.
“Giving birth is every woman’s dream and a special moment, but being unable to settle medical bills is an emotionally draining thing to happen to anyone, and so today we took the initiative to put a smile on the faces of these women,” she said.
She added that the Women Banking Desk has special initiatives tailored for women, in addition to free financial literacy programmes aimed at creating awareness and empowering them to be financially independent.
On his part, Managing Director, BOA Ghana, Abderrahmane Belbachir, highlighted that the kind gesture is about creating genuine human connections and responding to real community needs.
“It is part of our CSR to support women in general and mothers in particular in this period of Mother’s Day,” he emphasised.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Medical Director of Maamobi General Hospital, Nursing Officer, Barbara Mensah, expressed heartfelt gratitude to BOA for the benevolent exercise, emphasising its vital role in decongesting the limited bed space for other patients to get access.
BOA has, over the years, supported small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as part of efforts to boost job creation across its markets.
The MD further reinforced the bank’s commitment at the local level, noting that the Ghana subsidiary will diversify its investment portfolio while expanding support for businesses and key industries.
“We are repositioning our operations in Ghana to better support businesses. This includes diversifying our investments and increasing access to financing for SMEs and key sectors of the economy,” he added.
