Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare etched his name into Ghana football history after becoming the first Ghanaian goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut.
The shot-stopper achieved the feat during Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BMO Field in Toronto.
Asare was handed his first appearance on football’s biggest stage and delivered a composed performance between the posts as the Black Stars secured all three points.
His clean sheet sets him apart from previous Ghana goalkeepers who made their World Cup debuts before him.
Richard Kingson, Adam Kwarasey, Fatau Dauda and Lawrence Ati-Zigi all conceded goals in their first appearances at the World Cup, making Asare the first Ghanaian goalkeeper to begin his tournament journey with a shutout.
The Hearts of Oak star’s landmark achievement comes as another major milestone in a career that has continued to rise over the past year.
Benjamin Asare will now hope to build on his impressive debut when Ghana face England in their next Group L fixture on June 23 at Gillette Stadium.
