Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to strengthen its founding values and principles, warning that some members appear more interested in personal benefits than the party’s political philosophy.
In her view, the NDC has not been sufficiently intentional in educating new members about its ideals over the years. She expressed concern that some people view the party as a means of securing political power, jobs, contracts and other material benefits rather than embracing party principles.
Mrs Mould-Iddrisu emphasized the need for the party to educate members about its history, values and achievements to help preserve the party’s identity, to serve as a guide its future.
Additionally, she reflected on the legacy of the late former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Evans Atta Mills, highlighting their emphasis on morality, integrity and principled leadership.
According to her, political commitment should be driven by shared beliefs and a desire to serve the country, rather than expectations of personal rewards when a party assumes power.
Mrs Mould-Iddrisu was thrilled about the enthusiasm and huge interest in the NDC’s internal party elections. While noting the significance of that, she cautioned that even though the number of people contesting positions from the branch level to the constituency and regional levels is encouraging, the people contesting for the various party positions must be reminded that their membership and positions they might hold, is not for personal gain but rather for nation building.
She said the party must continue to encourage members to understand its philosophy while paying greater attention to vulnerable and less privileged groups within its structures.
The former minister also highlighted the importance of preserving the NDC’s history, including the sacrifices made by its founders, leaders and its members.
She said documenting the party’s experiences would help future generations understand its evolution, appreciate its achievements and recognise the principles that have shaped its political journey.
