Bofoakwa Tano has been relegated from the Ghana Premier League just a year after their much-celebrated return to the top flight.

The Sunyani-based club regained their premier league status last season after 16 years in the lower tier, securing a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Eleven Wonders in the Division One Zone 1 playoff at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Bofoakwa Tano began the season strongly, climbing to the top of the table with two wins and two draws in their first four games. However, a defeat to Aduana Stars in November marked the beginning of a downward spiral.

Inconsistent performances and poor results saw them slip down the table, leading to the dismissal of head coach Frimpong Manso. His successor, John Eduafo, could not reverse the club’s fortunes, and they continued to languish near the relegation zone.

The team’s fate was sealed following a 1-0 loss to Legon Cities on Saturday, and with other results going against them on Sunday, they found themselves stranded on 33 points with just two matches remaining.

Despite their struggles in the league, Bofoakwa Tano has a chance to end the season on a high note. They have reached the final of the MTN FA Cup and will face Nsoatreman FC on June 23 at the University of Ghana Stadium. Winning the cup would not only be a significant achievement but also secure them a place in African continental football, offering a silver lining to an otherwise disappointing season.

In a contrasting narrative, FC Samartex has won the Ghana Premier League title in just their second season in the top flight. The Timber Giants clinched the trophy with a 1-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars, a win that put them beyond the reach of their closest competitors, Aduana FC, Medeama SC, and Nations FC. Samartex’s triumph is a historic achievement, marking them as the third club from the Western Region to win the league, following in the footsteps of Sekondi Hasaacas, XI Wise, and Medeama SC.

Bofoakwa Tano’s relegation is a significant setback for the club, but their upcoming MTN FA Cup final presents an opportunity for redemption and a chance to bring some joy to their supporters.
