A three-year-old boy has been hit and killed by a car as he headed to a soft play centre to celebrate his birthday.
Josiah Toleafoa was struck by an unnamed 36-year-old driver in a car park outside Play City in San Diego, California.
He and his family were making their way to the venue to celebrate the toddler’s third birthday on 27 May.
One witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, told NBC7 San Diego that Josiah’s mother sobbed hysterically as police and paramedics tried in vain to save her child.
Chula Vista police said the driver was cooperative, stayed at the scene, and that drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the incident.
A GoFundMe page, set up by the family, said: “On May 27, 2023, such a beautiful soul was taken from our family way too soon.
“Into God’s loving arms Josiah Caleb Toleafoa, my nephew, went yesterday, on his third birthday, in an accident that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
“As his family, we mourn for the life he won’t get to have and the heartbreak all those left behind will have to face.”
The page, which has so far raised more than $22,000 (£17,800), described Josiah as a “little boy who loved with a tremendous heart”.
The owner of Play City confirmed their company is donating $2,000 (£1,600) to Josiah’s family.
He said his landlord is matching that amount.
The driver has not been charged, but it is understood the incident is still under investigation.
