Following a recent racial abuse suffered by Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior the Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil has agreed on a new law to tackle subsequent cases in their quest to get rid of hate generated due to race and colour of individuals.
The law was named after the Real Madrid forward in reference to the abuse he suffered a few weeks ago in a La Liga match against Valencia.
Vinicius Jr was treated to racial chanting from the fans throughout the contest. During a dispute in the last stages of the game, he reacted by lashing out at Valencia’s Hugo Duro.
Despite appearing to be placed in a headlock before attacking his opponent, Vinicius Jr was the sole player sent off by the referee, leaving him clearly angry as he exited the field, tears flowing down his cheeks.
The incident triggered many to act in solidarity with the talented winger with FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemning the the act.
It has also promoted officials of his country to pass the law which forces the termination of any event which witnesses any form of racism.
“We have to eradicate this cancer that is racism once and for all, especially in sports. This law aims to combat racism and create an egalitarian society,” said Rio de Janeiro state representative Josemar.
The new law also includes a mechanism for reporting racism to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and referring victims to the Public Defender’s Office, among other bodies.
