Canada’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was overshadowed by a serious injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné at BC Place.
The Canadian star appeared to suffer a severe leg injury following a late challenge from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo during the second half of the Group B encounter.
Scenes of distress quickly unfolded on the pitch as Koné lay injured, with several Canadian players forming a protective circle around their teammate while medical staff attended to him.
Madibo was visibly shaken by the incident and held his head in disbelief as players from both sides awaited the referee’s decision. Following a VAR review, the Qatari midfielder’s initial booking was upgraded to a straight red card as they finished the game with ten men.
Koné was eventually stretchered off the field while receiving oxygen treatment, waving to the crowd as supporters inside BC Place rose to applaud the midfielder.
The injury cast a shadow over an otherwise memorable evening for the tournament hosts, who cruised to victory through a Jonathan David hat-trick and further goals from Cyle Larin, Nathan-Dylan Saliba and Mohamed Almanai.
Shortly after scoring Canada’s fourth goal of the match, Saliba paid an emotional tribute to his teammate by holding up Koné’s jersey in front of the home supporters.
While Canada celebrated a result that boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage, attention has now turned to Koné’s condition, with the nation hoping the talented midfielder makes a full and speedy recovery.
