Chelsea have turned to former Tottenham and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino to revive the club after their worst Premier League season ever.

The Argentine tactician has been appointed on a two-year contract, with an option of a further year.

Despite significant investment by the new owners, Chelsea failed to secure European football, finishing the campaign in 12th place in the Premier League.

However, the club remain confident in Pochettino’s ability to restore their position at the pinnacle of English football, especially considering their recent successes, having won the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2021.

“Mauricio is a world-class coach with an exceptional track record. We are all eagerly anticipating his arrival,” the club stated in a press release.

He will work with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart.

“Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward,” Winstanley and Stewart said in a statement.

“He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.”

Pochettino, 51, will officially begin his new role on July 1, 2023.

He replaces interim boss Frank Lampard, who struggled during his short tenure, winning just one of his 11 games in charge.

Lampard had taken over from Graham Potter, who also failed to make a significant impact after being appointed following the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel earlier in the season.
