The manager of Nigerian singer Davido, Israel DMW, apologised to Muslims on behalf of his boss for a music video that was deemed to be offensive to Islam.
The video, which was a snippet of the music video for Davido’s signee Logos Olori’s song “Jaye Lo,” showed people dancing in front of a mosque.
The video was widely criticized by Muslims, who felt that it was disrespectful to their religion.
In a post on Instagram, Israel DMW said that the video had been “an entertainment that had been presented wrongly.” He said that Davido had only wanted to help promote budding singers, and that he “deeply regrets” any offense that the video may have caused.
Israel DMW’s apology comes after several days of protests by Muslim youths in northern Nigeria. The protests were sparked by the video, and some protesters had vandalized banners bearing Davido’s face.
In his apology, Israel DMW called for “love to reign.” He said that Davido is “a peace-loving person” and that he “would never do anything to intentionally offend anyone.”
It is unclear whether Davido himself will issue a public apology. However, his manager’s apology is a step in the right direction, and it is hoped that it will help to defuse the situation.
