Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Derrick Luckassen has joined the Black Stars camp in Cardiff ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 30-year-old centre-back has been called up as concerns continue to grow over the fitness of experienced defender Alexander Djiku, who is struggling with an injury sustained at club level.
Luckassen’s arrival provides head coach Carlos Queiroz with an additional defensive option as the Black Stars finalize preparations for the global tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Born in the Netherlands, Luckassen opted to represent Ghana through his family heritage and has remained part of the national team’s wider plans in recent years. He was previously included in Ghana’s squad for the international friendlies against Austria and Germany.
His invitation comes at a crucial moment, with Djiku’s participation in the World Cup now in serious doubt after the defender was unable to fully train following his arrival in camp.
Luckassen has enjoyed a solid season with Cypriot side Pafos and will be eager to seize the opportunity to impress the technical team as Ghana prepares to announce its final 26-man squad for the tournament.
The Black Stars will face Wales in a final preparatory match before travelling to North America, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
