Ghana’s national women’s tennis team, the Diamond Rackets, have departed for Gaborone, Botswana, to compete in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Africa Group III.
The tournament, which begins on July 13, will bring together 11 African nations battling for promotion to the Europe/Africa Group II in 2027. Ghana will compete alongside Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.
The Diamond Rackets squad is made up of Sisu-Makena Tomegah, Gwendolyn Klu, Tracy Ampah and Precious Okoh, with the team being guided by experienced coach Bernard Ashitey Armaah.
Ahead of the competition, Ghana underwent an intensive residential training camp in Accra focused on technical development, tactical preparation, physical conditioning, mental strength and team bonding.
Armaah expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, saying the players have shown strong commitment and are prepared to compete against some of Africa’s best tennis nations.
Ghana Tennis Federation President Isaac Aboagye Duah praised sponsors and supporters whose contributions made the team’s participation possible, despite challenges in securing funding during a FIFA World Cup year.
He acknowledged support from institutions including Dot.Atelier Foundation, Stanbic Bank Ghana, Ecobank Development Corporation, CBG Bank and other partners.
Although Ghana enters the tournament as one of the unseeded teams, the Federation remains optimistic about the team’s chances and has called on Ghanaians to rally behind the Diamond Rackets as they seek to make history on the continental stage.
