The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims that it acted unlawfully in releasing the provisional voter register for the upcoming exhibition exercise.
The Commission maintains that it operates within the legal framework and timeline required to compile the voter register.
Dr Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training at the EC, clarified in an interview with TV3 on August 9, 2024, that the law stipulates 30 days for compiling the register following the completion of mop-up registration.
“We are still within this legal timeframe. It’s important not to rush the process to avoid potential errors and subsequent inquiries,” Dr Quaicoe stated.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized the EC for what it describes as a delay in providing the provisional voter register to political parties, with only six days remaining before the exhibition begins.
The NDC alleges that the delay reflects incompetence or an attempt to undermine the process.
In a statement on August 14, 2024, Dr Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections, accused the EC of failing to honour its obligations under CI 91 as amended by CI 126.
He detailed that despite submitting an external drive and additional requests for regional register code books, the EC had met its responsibilities over two weeks ago.
In response, the EC assured that the provisional voter register would be provided to political parties before the exhibition.
Dr Quaicoe emphasized the importance of maintaining the data’s accuracy and confirmed that all processes would be duly followed. “We cannot sidestep any of the processes,” he asserted.
