The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has refuted allegations that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is responsible for the current diplomatic strain between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

In a statement released on August 10, the Ministry categorically labelled the claims as “wholly unfounded and lacking substantial evidence or merit.”

The rebuttal follows former President John Dramani Mahama’s suggestion that President Akufo-Addo’s recent interactions with the United States had negatively impacted Ghana’s relationship with Burkina Faso, leading to “diplomatic tension” between the two countries.

The Ministry emphasized that under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, diplomatic efforts have consistently aimed to build and maintain constructive and respectful relations with all nations, including Burkina Faso.

It highlighted a ministerial visit to Burkina Faso in 2022 and a subsequent visit by President Akufo-Addo in 2023, marked by high levels of courtesy and hospitality. It reinforced the commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

“The leadership of President Akufo-Addo has been devoted to advancing diplomacy in a manner that respects the values of international engagement and promotes peaceful relations on the global stage,” the Ministry reiterated, instilling a sense of reassurance in the audience.

The Ministry reiterates Ghana’s unwavering commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with Burkina Faso, guided by mutual respect and cooperation principles.

The Ministry called for a focus on enhancing relationships and building bridges with Burkina Faso, urging against disseminating falsehoods that could undermine international cooperation and encouraging the audience to be responsible and engaged in the diplomatic process.
