Former member of parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has advised President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his campaign promise of limiting the number of ministers to 60 if it proves inadequate for effective governance.

Speaking during an interview on TV3 on January 11, 2025, Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the appeal of a smaller government but stressed that the priority should always be the nation’s progress.

“Let Mr. Mahama consider that campaign message as a presidential candidate then. Now he is our President, let him think presidential. If for any reason he thinks that Ghana cannot do with 60 ministers, let him do what is good for the country,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi compared the situation to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who adjusted some of his campaign promises after experiencing the challenges of governance firsthand. He urged Ghanaians to be open-minded and understand that campaign promises might need to change when leaders face real-world complexities.

“I cited also President Kufuor, who before he became President, gave out certain indices,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of flexibility in leadership decisions for the benefit of the country.
