Renowned Clinical Physiologist Prof. Daniel Bruce sounded the alarm on the dire consequences of galamsey on Ghanaian communities during his breakfast show appearance today.

“The psychological and physiopathological implications of galamsey are staggering,” Prof. Bruce emphasized. “Residents near affected areas are forced to deny their humanity and accept an inferior status due to lack of alternatives.”

He explained that individuals are knowingly exposing themselves to polluted water, despite the risk of disease, saying, “Your reality tells you not to use it, but you consciously silence that voice because there are no alternatives. “

Prof. Bruce asserted that prolonged exposure to polluted water has compromised the mental well-being of affected communities, questioning, “How can you be in your right state of mind when you use contaminated water for cooking and eating?”

Galamsey, a long-standing issue in Ghana, has escalated under the current government, prompting widespread demonstrations, strike actions, and international concern.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has pledged to combat galamsey, even stating he would put his presidency on the line to address the issue. However, the situation remains dire.
