The Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG) has partnered with the Act Community Library of Alpha Beta Educational Centre to enable students in the Ablekuma West Municipality to access literacy education after school hours.
The literacy programme, themed ‘ReadToGrow’, is a nationwide programme being championed by GEIG as part of its mission to offer access to quality and inclusive education/educational opportunities. The programme targets over 50,000 students and community participants.
The ReadToGrow programme complements what teachers teach in school as the students patronise the community library established by the Alpha Beta Educational Centre. GEIG will support the library with reading materials – books and other digital resources as well as volunteers to enable students’ optimal experience when accessing the Alpha Beta Community Library.
With collaboration from communities and schools, GEIG will use various approaches to reach the students, using both virtual and physical means to deliver the literacy lessons for easy understanding and participation.
With funding support from the Reach for Change-Ghana and Jacobs Foundation and a donation from Indomie Ghana and Promasidor, GEIG calls on all to support the programme by enrolling their children and students in the ReadToGrow programme to increase the literacy rate for underserved communities.
Sustainable Development Goal 4 will not be achievable should literacy education be out. In Ghana, several basic school students in underserved communities have the potential of being future leaders but cannot read and write as expected of their class.
According to Gyesi (2022), the 2021 Report on Population and Housing Census organised by Ghana Statistical Services revealed that the literacy rate was 69.5 percent in 2021 compared to 67.5 percent in 2010. This means that the rate increased by only 2.7 percent within a decade.
Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG) is a non-profit organisation that has existed since 2014.
