Geoffrey Michaels was a prominent violinist and violist, recognized as a child prodigy in Australia during the 1950s.

He performed and taught primarily in the United States.

His early life was marked by exceptional musical talent; he began taking violin lessons at the age of five and quickly gained recognition for his skill.

At 14, Michaels won the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s concerto competition, becoming the youngest performer to do so.

He made his first recording at this young age, which sold out within weeks of its release.

Michaels’ education included studying at the Curtis Institute of Music under the guidance of Efrem Zimbalist and Oscar Shumsky.

The Curtis Institute of Music is a prestigious private conservatory located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It’s renowned for educating and training exceptionally gifted young musicians to engage with both local and global communities through the highest level of artistry.

With a small student body of about 175, Curtis provides an education characterized by a “learn by doing” philosophy and personalized attention from a faculty that includes a high proportion of actively performing musicians.

Geoffrey Michaels’ career was distinguished with membership in the Curtis String Quartet and notable performances, including the US premiere of Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso and Arvo Pärt’s Tabula Rasa for Two Violins and Strings at Lincoln Center in New York City.

He also collaborated with pianist and composer Roger Smalley and was a founding member of the Liebesfreud Quartet.

Sadly, Geoffrey Michaels passed away at the age of 79 on February 20, 2024.

The cause of Geoffrey Michaels’ death has not been revealed.

His interpretation of Sir Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61, with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, which many consider one of the all-time best performances of this work.

Michaels was a prize winner in the Tchaikovsky Competition, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and the Concours Jacques Thibaud in Paris.
