Former Ghana FA Vice President, George Afriyie, has lauded the Ghana Football Association for naming Chris Hughton as the head coach of the Black Stars.

Hughton, 64, was named as the replacement for Otto Addo who left the role in December 2022 immediately after the West African powerhouse exited the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The outspoken former CAF AFCON Marketing Committee member said the appointment was long overdue. The Akyem Tafo-based Susubiribi Sporting Club bankroller also feels the former Newcastle United manager should have been the head coach for Ghana in Qatar.

“His appointment is long overdue. Because some of us believe that he should have led us to the World Cup. Looking at his pedigree, this is the same thing we did with Avram Grant. A coach of his caliber and stature is coming in to manage the players. Chris is a top-notch manager and for me, I commend the GFA for the appointment of Chris Hughton,” he told Ghana Sports Online.

He called on the Ghanaian fraternity to support the London-born who won the Premier League Manager of the Month in February 2018 when he was in charge of Brighton and Hove Albion.

“Let’s all support him to succeed,” he added.

Hughton will be assisted by George Boateng and Mas-Ud Dramani who were also named assistants for the Black Stars during Otto Addo’s tenure as head coach.
