Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ chances ahead of their crucial FIFA World Cup Group L clash against England, describing the fixture as a derby and backing the team to secure a positive result.
Speaking to 3Sports before Tuesday’s encounter at Gillette Stadium, Okraku dismissed any sense of intimidation despite England’s impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening match.
“For me, Ghana against England is a derby like Ghana versus Nigeria or Hearts of Oak versus Kotoko. I’m positive about the outcome,” he said.
Okraku’s optimism follows Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening group match at BMO Field. Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi scored a stoppage-time winner to hand the Black Stars all three points and boost confidence within the camp.
The result left Ghana second in Group L behind England on goal difference, setting up a potentially decisive showdown between the two sides as they battle for top spot and qualification to the knockout stage.
After facing England, Ghana will conclude their group campaign against Croatia, with hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since 2010.
