Superstar singers Burna Boy and Rema secured victories in the inaugural Afrobeats categories at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards held on Sunday, November 19. Burna Boy clinched the title of Top Afrobeats Artiste, triumphing over formidable contenders such as Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian star Libianca, etching his name in history as the inaugural winner of the newly-established Top Afrobeats Artiste category.

Similarly, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ remix featuring Selena Gomez emerged victorious in the Top Afrobeats Song category, prevailing over competing tracks like Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Oxlade’s ‘Ku Lo Sa,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ and Victony’s ‘Soweto’ with Rema and Don Toliver. The ‘Calm Down’ remix marked its place as the maiden winner of the Top Afrobeats Song category.

However, despite the success in the Afrobeats categories, the ‘Calm Down’ remix faced disappointment in other categories such as Top Billboard Collaboration, Top Billboard Excl. U.S. Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song, and Top Radio Song.

In the broader spectrum of the awards, American singer Morgan Wallen dominated the winners’ chart with an impressive 11 awards, closely followed by Taylor Swift with 10 victories.
