Ghana legend Mohammed Polo believes the Ghana Football Association must appoint a Black Stars coach capable of improving the quality of the players and taking them to another level.Polos comments come as Ghana searches for a replacement for Carlos Queiroz, who mutually parted ways with the GFA on October 1 following a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The GFA and Ministry of Sports and Recreation have formed a five-member search committee, chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe, to identify and recommend a suitable candidate for the vacant position.Polo believes the priority should be finding a coach who can bring something new to the team rather than simply working with the abilities the players already possess. We need coaches who can add value, who can add something to what the players have. Now, the coaches who come there, they dont add anything. So, it is what the players know is what they are playing, he told Citi Sports. The former Black Stars player also called for greater attention to the development of young players, arguing that Ghana must strengthen its coaching structures from the grassroots. So, not until we go to the grassroots and find a coach, we need a coach. Today, if we dont have a good coach, you know, that will develop because the talents are there. But they are limited, he said.Polo believes young talents need the right coaching to develop their abilities and eventually reach the level required to play for the senior national team. They need some additional value to grow and progress and improve to the level that were looking for, he added. His comments come as the Black Stars prepare for their next 2027 AFCON qualifier against Somalia in November, with the new coach expected to inherit a team that has lost both of its opening Group C matches.
