Black Stars winger Kamaldeen Sulemana could miss Ghana’s crucial game against Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers due to injury.

The Southampton forward is battling with a muscle injury which has kept him out of the Saints first two games in the English Championship.

It is feared that he would not recover in time to even represesnt Ghana for the all-important encounter due to the extent of the injury although coach of the club Russel Martin has given a positive update of his recovery.

“Kamaldeen had a muscle injury and that is hard. He’s been away for the last few days getting some specialist treatment as it’s been a busy physio room and I’ve had to prioritise performance. It was agreed he would go and do that and he’s happy with that, he will come back with renewed energy and vigour at some point next week – but his situation is also still the same,” Martin said.

“He is our player and we want him as fit as we possibly can to try and help us on the pitch. In the meantime, it is what it is.”

The 21-year-old joined Southanpton in the Premier League in January but couldn’t help them maintain their top-flight status despite a great display on the final day which saw two excellent goals from the Ghanaian in an exciting 4-4 draw against Liverpool.

Sulemana may then see his position filled by Ernest Nuamah, Osman Bukari or Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer.

Ghana are aiming to avoid defeat in their final match in the AFCON qualifiers as they aim to book their place in the tournament which is schedulled for next year in Ivory Coast.

After five matches in the qualifiers, Ghana however lead the Group E table with nine points followed by Angola who have eight points with CAR following closely with seven points.
