The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Italian engineering firm, Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A., for a proposed €300 million investment in downstream aluminium infrastructure.
The latest development is aimed at accelerating the country’s industrialisation drive.
The agreement, signed in Accra at the Residence of the Italian Ambassador, forms part of plans to develop an integrated industrial park within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone and deepen local value addition to the country’s bauxite resources.
Under the proposed investment, Danieli plans to establish an aluminium foil rolling plant and a Centre of Excellence for training and technology development.
The facility is expected to produce between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes of aluminium foil annually across packaging, pharmaceutical, food service and industrial applications.
The Centre of Excellence will focus on technical training, innovation and skills development in advanced aluminium processing, and is expected to serve as a regional hub for industrial capacity building and technology transfer.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GIADEC, Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, said the partnership reflects a strategic shift towards building a fully integrated aluminium value chain in Ghana, moving the country away from raw-material exports towards higher-value industrial production.
“GIADEC will continue to work with credible global partners to position Ghana as an emerging hub for advanced aluminium manufacturing in West Africa,” he said.
Danieli said the project represents an opportunity to support Ghana’s transition into value-added manufacturing and export-led industrial growth.
“This is a critical opportunity to transform natural resources into high-value industrial products,” said Danilo Dreolini of the Danieli Group, adding that the company remains committed to supporting Ghana’s industrial development agenda.
Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, also speaking at the signing ceremony, said the agreement reflects growing industrial cooperation between Ghana and Italy and expressed support for deeper economic ties between both countries.
The proposed aluminium plant will be located within the Integrated Industrial Park being developed by ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms in partnership with GIADEC and the Tema Development Corporation.
The site, located in the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone, was selected for its proximity to infrastructure, including the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), Tema Port and established industrial facilities, which officials say will support export-oriented production efficiency.
GIADEC said the project is expected to support the country’s broader industrial agenda through value addition to aluminium resources, job creation and technology transfer.
They also noted that the Centre of Excellence will help build technical capacity in the sector. At the same time,e the industrial park model is expected to attract further foreign direct investment into manufacturing.
The project is also expected to create direct and indirect jobs and stimulate the development of upstream and downstream industrial clusters in the Tema enclave.
In the long term, GIADEC believes the integration of infrastructure, technology and investment within a structured industrial park could strengthen the country’s manufacturing base and improve export competitiveness in processed aluminium products.
The signing ceremony was attended by officials from GIADEC, Danieli, the Italian Embassy in Ghana and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
