President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government has granted permission to the security services to recruit 20,000 personnel over a four-year period.
The President made the disclosure in his remarks during his Citizens’ Engagement with the Chiefs and People of the Upper West Region in Wa to climax his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Region.
He said the Ghana Armed Forces opened their recruitment centres in 2025, although they unfortunately witnessed the tragic incident at El-Wak stadium in which some young applicants lost their lives.
He said the recruitment process continued with medical examinations and the selection of qualified candidates.
“The first batch has already been invited for training, while the second batch will follow. Therefore, if you completed your medical examination but have not yet received an invitation, it does not mean you have been left out,” the President stated.
He said the Armed Forces received clearance to recruit 5,000 soldiers this year and that because of the very large number of applicants, they directed them to maintain a continuous recruitment process.
“Our target is to recruit 20,000 personnel over four years. This first batch of 5,000 represents the 2025 intake, followed by another 5,000 in 2026, another in 2027, and the final batch in 2028,” he said.
“The other security services were also allocated 5,000 recruitments, to be shared among the Police, Immigration, Fire Service, Prisons Service, and other agencies. Those services attempted to conduct a fully digital recruitment exercise.”
He said unfortunately, there were challenges with that digital process, but those issues had now been resolved and that they had instructed them to continue the recruitment using the same pool of qualified applicants.
“Out of about 120,000 applicants, they will continue selecting candidates in batches until they reach the 20,000 targets over the four-year period There is therefore an opportunity for young people who wish to serve in the security services,” President Mahama said.
He noted that, however, there were limits because the country cannot employ 120,000 soldiers and Police officers.
